About Huntsville’s In The Mood Big Swing Band
Huntsville’s In the Mood is a traditional 21 piece Glenn Miller style big band based in Huntsville, AL. Still the newest big swing band in the area, we have been playing together for over 5 years now, having started up late summer of 2014. We formed with a mission of keeping the legacy of Glenn Miller alive, and to help introduce newer audiences to the wonderful popular music from the big band era, played live by local musicians. Occasionally nicknamed the “Glenn Miller band of North Alabama”, we strive to reproduce the quality and authenticity of the greats from the 1940s and 1950s such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin. The idea of the band started out as a family combo, but quickly grew to a full scale big band, with each musician having a passion for playing this wonderful music, and enjoying the time at rehearsals and performances with each other as a great big family. Most appearances see only 18 musicians, but for extra special occasions you’ll see the full 21 piece band all together. We play all over Huntsville and North Alabama, at wedding receptions, corporate fundraisers, swing dances, elegant wine & dine dinner dances, and public concerts. We have played multiple times at Panoply, Concerts in the Park, City Lights & Stars at Burritt on the Mountain, and annually kick off the library summer concert series at Huntsville Public Library.
Some of our most popular hits include swing songs such as In the Mood (our theme song), Tuxedo Junction, A String of Pearls, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Fly Me to the Moon, Beyond the Sea, New York, New York, Mack the Knife, The Pink Panther, and Route 66. We also have a decent variety of other genres to suit all occasions, such as Latin, pop, oldies rock, Motown, and even some funk. A big band is the ultimate variety band, and with a full rhythm and horn section and three vocalists of differing styles, the possibilities for variety are endless. The warm harmonies that we produce with these arrangements fill the air and really create an atmosphere of musical magic. We are available for banquets, cocktails, receptions, dances and concerts. Our music is perfect for pretty much any occasion!
Our music is great for people of all ages, and instantly makes you want to move your feet. We try to stay as close to the original arrangements and try to keep everything positive and upbeat. This is swing music at its finest, and it is a style that can never go out of style. As North Alabama’s “Glenn Miller band”, one of our goals is to keep this wonderful music around, and to help promote a culture musical diversity.
From humble beginnings, practicing in the living room and kitchen of the founders’ home in the early days of the band, to where we are now, Huntsville’s In the Mood gets better and better each year, and has become the most sought-after big band in town, and we’re grateful for the opportunities!
